Animals often sleep very still for long periods. Find their pulse or listen for breathing.Grieving no two people respond to the loss of a pet the same way. This will protect flooring and furnishings. If your pet dies with their legs stretched out, gently fold them in closer to the body if they haven’t already stiffened. This will make the body easier to move in the future.

Another potential problem (as discussed in the comments below), is leaching of the pentobarbitone from the body into surrounding soil. Euthanasia drugs appear to persist for a long time in the environment. This is of particular concern if food crops are being harvested in the vicinity.

Many pup parents opt to add a headstone, pet memorial stone, or grave marker that honours their beloved pet. You can make one yourself using wood or you can custom-order a stone headstone that may feature things like your pup’s name, image, or a special phrase. Some people opt to decorate the grave with flowers, too.

If possible, wrap the pet in a couple of plastic bags and move to a cool, dry place such as a garage.Digging the grave before you bring his remains outside can give you a few minutes of peace when you need it most. It’s also far easier to do this without having to stare at your dog’s prepared remains.

The death of a pet isn’t easy, particularly if your companion dies in your home when you are alone. Call a friend or family member for help in your time of need.Importantly, commercial species such as chickens and other poultry cannot be legally buried. Contact your council for advice on options other than cremation in your area.

After 3-4 hours, the pet’s body will stiffen and it may be difficult to move alone.Select a spot in your yard that is suitable for digging. It should provide adequate drainage and never experience standing water, as this can lead to resurfacing. Ideally, it should be in an area that’s not at risk of digging by other animals, including other resident dogs, such as a gated-off garden.

Their body may begin to expel fluids as the muscles relax, which may cause stains. Move your pet's body to a cold stone floor, in a garage or utility room, as this will keep it cool.They are willing to accept donations, mainly for student teaching, but aren’t able to guarantee they could always say yes. Wrap your dog’s remains in a sheet, blanket, or other disposable item for burial. Some pup parents opt for using their dog’s favourite blanket with a toy tucked inside, but this is entirely up to you. Not only does this make burial easier since you won’t see your dog’s body in the ground, but it will also contain any messes that occur after death.

Ear Infections

If you notice that your dog is scratching frequently at their ears or demonstrates recurring head tipping or shaking, you should probably get their ears checked for an infection. Other indicators can be loss of fur, odour, and redness or swelling of the ear canal. If ear infections are reoccurring, there is also the potential for allergy involvement. Some things you can do to prevent ear infections are drying your dogs’ ears thoroughly after being in the water, using a dog cleaning solution to regularly clean out your pets’ ears, and managing any allergies appropriately. If your dog is showing any of the common signs of ear infections, it’s important to visit the veterinarian as soon as possible. Quick treatment is necessary not only for your dog’s comfort (these conditions can be painful!) but also to prevent the spread of infection to the middle and inner ear. Do not try to treat ear infections at home.

Your veterinarian will thoroughly clean your dog’s ears using a medicated ear cleanser. Your vet may also prescribe an ear cleanser and a topical medication for you to use at home. In severe cases, your vet may prescribe oral antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medications. When your dog sleeps, he has pain in his ear, has trouble sleeping, has trouble hearing when calling the dog, and cries more than usual. loss of balance and A fever of 100 F (38 C) or higher.

Itchy Skin Or Skin Infections

Unlike the occasional normal scratching behaviour that dogs exhibit, persistent continual scratching can be a sign of a skin condition, infection, or allergy. Certain food items such as soy, wheat, and corn can cause skin allergies in some dogs. Other causes can be bacterial or yeast infections that can sometimes result in Hot Spots or painful sores. Your veterinarian can treat these conditions accordingly sometimes with antibiotics, diet changes, or specialised shampoo to help treat the skin issues presenting. Flea allergy dermatitis, seasonal allergies or atopy, food allergies, contact dermatitis (e.g., soaps and perfumes), and sarcoptic mange (mites) are some of the most common causes of pruritus in dogs. Pruritus due to skin disease is one of the most common reasons dog owners seek veterinary care.

Is your dog feeling itchy, or does his skin appear flaky, moist or crusty? He may have a bacterial or fungal infection. You may also notice odour, inflammation or redness. Yeast dermatitis or staph infection can bring these symptoms, along with recurring health issues. It’s fairly common for dogs to experience skin problems, which can also be indicative of underlying health issues. Stiffness And Pain

As dogs age sometimes, they present with arthritis and joint pain especially if combined with weight gain that is not healthy for their size. Some other potential causes of stiffness and pain in joints can be overexertion, bacterial encephalitis, or parasitic infestations. A few potential indicators of inflammation and stiffness are awkward gaits, reluctance to rise, the rigidity of limbs, swelling, muscle spasms, depression, or noticeable fatigue. Treatment depends on the conditions identified by your veterinary provider. Muscle stiffness in dogs means that a muscle stays partially contracted for a period of time. It causes discomfort, tension and stiffness, and if not treated, can lead to chronic pain. An often overlooked element is the fascia which is your dog's connective tissue that provides the framework for their body.

Muscle tension and stiffness can also be caused by stress, repetitive movements, scar tissue from a previous injury, and overuse due to compensation for other painful areas such as achy arthritic joints, hip dysplasia or elbow dysplasia, tendonitis, muscle strains, or after surgery. Moreover, your dog’s fascia can play a role in your muscle stiffness in dogs as age, poor posture and a lack of movement can cause the fascia to thicken, and become ‘sticky’ and tight. When it ‘dries up’ and tightens around muscles, it can cause tight and stiff muscles, limit mobility and the development of trigger points.

Kennel Cough Or Canine Cough

This common name is an umbrella term for a range of respiratory infections that can be either bacterial or viral and impact the windpipe and/or voice box. The two most common causes are the bacterium Bordetella bronchiseptica and canine parainfluenza virus. Kennel Cough gets its name from a respiratory infection's ability to quickly travel through enclosed facilities with limited air circulation such as a kennel or shelter.These infections can travel through shared air, water, or objects. You can often identify a respiratory illness from a dry cough, gagging sound, fever, or coughing up white foam. If your dog is bright, perky, eating well, and playful, you may not need to visit the vet. But always phone for advice if you are worried and advise the clinic on arrival that your dog has been coughing – it’s best if they wait somewhere other than a crowded waiting room. In general, it's a good idea to keep your dog away from other dogs while they are coughing.

One mechanism of contraction prevention involves making sure your dog's vaccinations are up to date. To treat these respiratory conditions, you should consult your veterinarian and keep your pet isolated from other animals to prevent further spreading. There is no single test to diagnose kennel cough. Usually, if your dog has symptoms and has been exposed to a crowd of other canines within the incubation period, it’s adequate to diagnose them with kennel cough. Swabs can be taken to determine the exact virus or bacteria causing kennel cough – although this isn’t always useful for treatment. If there are suspected complications, radiographs can be used to assess a dog’s condition.

Obesity

Weight management in dogs can be a tricky topic because many dog owners have difficulty identifying when their pet is overweight. That is why this health issue can be one of the most overlooked dangers to pet longevity. This is often because obesity can come with a wide range of health problems such as high blood pressure, chronic kidney disease, arthritis, liver disease, low thyroid hormone production, diabetes, and cancer. The basic components for treating obesity are exercise and dietary changes. Depending on the severity of obesity and current fitness level, increasing the amount of your dog’s daily exercise may need to be done gradually. In general, most dogs can safely exercise for 15-30 minutes per day to start.

The duration and intensity can be slowly increased as your dog loses weight and becomes fitter. A simple walk is feasible for most families, but exercise can also include playing fetch indoors or outdoors, swimming, and running. If your dog is older, you may need to do shorter exercise sessions.

Heartworm

The title of this illness, unfortunately, does in fact describe a parasitic worm that lives in the heart and arteries of infected animals. Heartworm is an illness transmitted from one animal to another by mosquitoes. Screening for heartworm should be done on an annual basis through blood testing. Quite disturbingly these parasites travel through the bloodstream, damaging arteries and organs, and typically spreading after six months all the way to the heart and lungs. Symptoms can be weight loss, fatigue, laboured breathing, coughing, vomiting, or no symptoms at all. However, this condition, thankfully, is easily preventable with inexpensive medication, but if left untreated can be fatal. Heartworm disease, or dirofilariasis, is a serious and potentially fatal disease. It is caused by a blood-borne parasite known as Dirofilaria immitis.

Adult heartworms are found in the heart, pulmonary artery, and adjacent large blood vessels of infected dogs. Rarely, worms may be found in other parts of the circulatory system. Female adult heartworms are 6 - 14 long (15 - 36 cm) and 1/8 wide (3 mm). Males are about half the size of females. One dog may have as many as 300 worms present when diagnosed. Adult heartworms may live up to five years. During this time, females produce millions of offspring called microfilaria. These microfilariae live mainly in the small vessels of the bloodstream.

Diabetes

Similar to people, dogs can develop Type I and Type 2 diabetes and face some of the same complexities of this disease that we do. The most frequently occurring form of the disease in dogs is Type I, which requires them to receive insulin therapy to survive. This occurs when a dog’s pancreas cannot produce enough insulin on its own for its body to function. Signs that your dog could be diabetic are excessive thirst, weight loss, sweet or fruity breath, cataract formation, chronic skin or urinary tract infections, lethargy, among other symptoms. Some breeds are also more susceptible than others to having these conditions. Treating diabetes is a very individual process, so working with a veterinarian who understands the condition well is important for maintaining the good health of your dog.

Although some cases may be more challenging, canine diabetes can be usually managed successfully without complications. From giving injections to monitoring glucose levels daily, you will play the primary role in your dog’s care, and your commitment to keeping up with his daily shots and monitoring is extremely important. High sugar level in the bloodstream damages many organs. Without insulin to help convert the glucose in the bloodstream into fuel, high levels of glucose build up in the blood. Unfortunately, this abnormal blood chemistry acts like a sort of poison and eventually causes multi-organ damage. This often includes damage to the kidneys, eyes, heart, blood vessels, or nerves.

Cancer

Once confirmed though, many of the same treatment options which are available to people are used for dogs as well. For example, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and surgery. There is a full spectrum of different types of cancers that can impact dogs, and some are very treatable in contrast to others. The most common type of cancer we'll see in dogs is skin cancer. Little bumps and lumps that we might see on our pets. Once in a while, it's malignant cancer, like mast cell tumours, but most bumps and lumps are not tumours. The second most common one we see is probably splenic tumours. Splenic tumours are generally in large dogs, but they could be in dogs of any age. We also see lymphoma. Lymphoma is a cancer of the dog lymph nodes. We see osteosarcoma, which is bone cancer, usually in large dogs like Dobermans and Great Danes. But again, it could be in a smaller dog as well. Once in a while, we'll see cancer in the urinary bladder, and we might see cancer in the bloodstream, but those are pretty rare. In unspayed male and female dogs, we might see testicular cancer and also ovarian cancer, which is the biggest reason why we spay and neuter our pets

Urinary Tract Problems

UTIs become evident through symptoms such as frequent urination, breaking housetraining, blood in the urine, dribbling urine, crying out while urinating, straining to urinate or frequently and obsessively licking the genital area. If you notice any of these symptoms in your dog, take him to your vet. Your vet will conduct a urine sample to determine the type of infection and prescribe the proper antibiotic treatment. Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are fairly common in dogs. Dogs with UTIs generally attempt to urinate very frequently whenever they go outside. They also may strain to urinate, or cry out or whine when urinating if it is painful. Sometimes you might even see blood in their urine. Dripping urine, or frequent licking of the genitals, may also signal that a UTI is present. Urine that has a very strong odour to it can also be a sign that your dog has an infection.

Generally, a UTI occurs when bacteria travel up the urethra and into the bladder. Urine in the bladder is supposed to be sterile, but once bacteria find their way there, they can grow and reproduce, causing a UTI. Additionally, some dogs will develop bladder stones in conjunction with their UTI, which opens the door for additional health issues. A dog’s urinary tract consists of the kidneys, ureters, urinary bladder, and urethra. These anatomical parts of the urinary tract are located inside the abdomen as well as in an area in the back of the abdomen called the retroperitoneal space.

Rabies

Rabies is a vaccine-preventable, zoonotic, viral disease. Once clinical symptoms appear, rabies is virtually 100% fatal. In up to 99% of cases, domestic dogs are responsible for rabies virus transmission to humans. Yet, rabies can affect both domestic and wild animals. It is spread to people and animals through bites or scratches, usually via saliva. Rabies is present on all continents, except Antarctica, with over 95% of human deaths occurring in the Asia and Africa regions. Rabies is one of the Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTD) that predominantly affects poor and vulnerable populations who live in remote rural locations. Approximately 80% of human cases occur in rural areas. Although effective human vaccines and immunoglobulins exist for rabies, they are not readily available or accessible to those in need. Globally, rabies deaths are rarely reported and children between the ages of 5–14 years are frequent victims.

Managing a rabies exposure, where the average cost of rabies post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is currently estimated at an average of US$ 108 can be a catastrophic financial burden on affected families whose average daily income may be as low as US$ 1–2 per person1. Your dog may quickly become restless and irritable, even showing aggression. Rabid animals may also be uncharacteristically affectionate. Similarly, if your dog is usually excited and happy, they may suddenly seem relaxed and disinterested. Physical signs of rabies in dogs to watch for include fever, difficulty swallowing, excessive drooling, staggering, seizures, and even paralysis.

Kidney Disease

Normally, healthy kidneys can eliminate protein wastes, and balance body water, salts and acids to produce high-quality urine. Although kidney disease is more often seen in older dogs and cannot be reversed or cured, its progression and debilitation can be slowed as soon as it’s found and treated. The clinical signs of more advanced kidney failure include loss of appetite, depression, vomiting, diarrhoea, and very bad breath. Occasionally, ulcers will be found in the mouth. If your dog has kidney disease, your vet will prescribe medications and kidney-friendly diets, but the best way to prevent it is by catching it early. Regular vet checkups and appointments keep your dog’s health on track. Vets can measure levels of creatinine in the blood and SDMA tests can be administered so irregularities can be more easily identified. The SDMA test is available to all veterinarians in the U.S. and Canada and picks up kidney disease months or even years earlier than traditional tests and is not impacted by a pet’s muscle mass When disease or advanced age causes the filtration process to become inefficient and ineffective, blood flow to the kidneys is increased in an attempt to increase filtration.

The body must increase the amount of blood flowing through the kidneys since less and less of the toxins are being removed each time. This results in the production of more urine. To keep the dog from becoming dehydrated due to increased fluid loss in the urine, thirst and water consumption is increased. Therefore, one of the earliest clinical signs of kidney failure is increased water consumption and urination and is called compensated renal failure. After approximately 2/3 of the kidney tissue is destroyed, there is a rapid rise in waste products in the bloodstream and an apparent sudden onset of severe disease.

Hip Dysplasia

Some dogs begin to show signs of hip dysplasia when they are as young as four months of age. Others develop it in conjunction with osteoarthritis as they age. In both cases, there are a few symptoms that owners should be familiar with. These symptoms may vary depending on the severity of the disease, the level of inflammation, the degree of looseness in the joint, and how long the dog has suffered from hip dysplasia. At your dog’s regular checkup, your veterinarian will perform a physical exam. Sometimes this exam is enough for your veterinarian to suspect hip dysplasia. In other cases, it’s up to owners to let veterinarians know when dogs are experiencing discomfort. Your veterinarian will also need a history of your dog’s health and symptoms, any possible incidents or injuries that may have contributed to these symptoms, and any information you have about your dog’s parentage.

The definitive diagnosis usually comes with a radiograph or X-ray. Your veterinarian will take radiographs of your dog’s hips to determine the degree and severity of the hip dysplasia, which will help determine the best course of treatment for your dog. There are quite a few treatment options for hip dysplasia in dogs, ranging from lifestyle modifications to surgery. If your dog’s hip dysplasia is not severe, or if your dog is not a candidate for surgery for medical or financial reasons, your veterinarian may recommend a nonsurgical approach.

Diseases

Diarrhoea

If your dog has persistent constipation or diarrhoea that lasts for longer than 48 hours or there are any differences in the poo such as the presence of blood or mucus, it is recommended to visit your vet and, if possible, take a fresh stool sample with you. Withholding food for 12 to 24 hours, and providing water in small amounts frequently, can clear the cause of the upset and allow the gastrointestinal tract to settle. It’s usually the first line of attack for diarrhoea. Before you decide on a fast, be sure that your dog is healthy enough to endure it. Puppies, and elderly dogs, for example, need nutrients. Also, a fast may not be appropriate for small dogs who do not have the physical reserves of their larger cousins. Diarrhoea can lead to dehydration, so make sure to give your dog access to water at all times. You may also offer unflavored Pedialyte to help maintain electrolyte balance under a vet’s advice.

Repeated vomiting, gagging, sneezing or coughing

Persistent sickness or choking when eating is a concern. Vomiting can be a sign of a developing allergy or a more serious infection, particularly in older dogs. Kennel cough can also be a serious contagious illness.Canine chronic bronchitis produces a dry, hacking cough in dogs that worsens with exercise and excitement. It is caused by persistent inflammation of the airways. Inflammation swells the lining of the airways and produces mucus which further narrows the passages in the lungs. Exposure to airborne pollutants and irritants such as cigarette smoke, are thought to lead to the disease. Chronic bronchitis in dogs is considered a progressive disease that will worsen with time and requires regular management to help ensure the best quality of life possible. Treatment options for chronic bronchitis focus on managing the inflammatory response. Inhaled corticosteroids are the preferred anti-inflammatory format for long-term management of the condition. Unlike oral steroids and injectable formats, inhaled medications target the lungs directly and do not cause the same side effects (e.g., excess urination, aggression, lethargy). One of the more common inhaled steroids prescribed is fluticasone propionate (also known as Flovent HFA and Flixotide HFA, GSK).

Refusal to eat for over 24 hours

For a range of reasons, your dog’s eating patterns may occasionally become irregular. But if your dog refuses food for a day or more, consult your vet.A decreased appetite in dogs is often a sign of sickness, especially if your dog is exhibiting other symptoms at the same time. Although a loss of appetite in dogs doesn’t necessarily indicate serious disease, prompt veterinary attention is important because it could be a sign of significant illness, including cancer, various systemic infections, pain, liver problems, and kidney failure. If your dog’s loss of appetite is caused by illness, the vet may recommend a prescription diet to meet your pet’s nutritional needs while the underlying disease is being addressed. Sometimes these diets are not particularly tasty, especially if your dog is used to regular treats or food.

Excessive thirst or urination

Unusually excessive thirst and frequent urination is a common sign of illness.In a pet with increased thirst and urination, the serum biochemistry panel could show some of the following changes: Elevated liver enzymes could indicate liver disease or hyperadrenocorticism. Elevated urea and creatinine are usually a sign of kidney disease. Often bladder, kidney, or liver problems are what causes excessive thirst and urination in dogs. Dogs may be responding to any number of bladder problems that make the sensation of urination quite urgent, even when it's really not. Bladder infection.Dogs with kidney problems may not be able to concentrate their urine. They pee more, and to avoid dehydration, they have to drink more. Kidney disease is treated by modifying the dog's food and addressing any underlying causes of kidney failure, such as kidney infections or stones.

Red or swollen gums

Reddened or swollen gums, particularly when associated with bad breath, are an indication of gum disease. When severe, dogs may lose teeth, drop food from their mouths and suffer weight loss due to difficulty eating.When a dog's gums begin to turn red, it could mean the beginning of gingivitis or periodontal disease. Red gums in dogs can also be caused by injury, ingesting something toxic, or overheating. In rare cases, the cause may be oral cancer. Reddened gums may be tender and painful, so your dog may be reluctant to eat. With this mild type of gum disease, bacteria build up at the base of the teeth, forming tartar and plaque. This inflames the gums, but damage has not yet occurred to the tooth bone or ligaments holding the teeth in place. When gingivitis worsens, the gums become damaged.If a young dog has too many teeth for the size of their mouth, their gums may become impacted and red.With some dogs, their gums tend to turn red or even swell as they grow older.

Difficulty urinating

Look out for yelping when urinating, a hunched back or blood in the urine. Obstructions in your dog's bladder or urethra can lead to urinary retention. These obstructions can be the result of bladder stones, urethral plugs, blood clots, a narrowing of the urethra (called stricture), or even cancerous tumours. Also, if minerals accumulate in the urinary tract, it can also cause an obstruction.Urinary tract infections are common in dogs. If you’ve ever had a urinary tract infection, then you have an idea of how uncomfortable they can be. Some of the same symptoms apply to dogs as humans, including the frequent need to urinate, combined with difficulty expressing urine. Kidney failure can also lead to difficulty urinating, as can neurological conditions, and injuries or diseases that affect the nerves or spinal cord, but perhaps the most concerning possible cause for your dog’s difficulty is cancer.

Runny eyes or nose

Sneezing, panting, runny eyes and nose or other flu-like symptoms may be signs of respiratory problems, as are gasping or shortness of breath. dogs can be allergic to pollens, foods, drugs, mites, spores, and chemicals. They can even be allergic to human dander (our shed skin). A dog's allergy symptoms don't stop at a runny nose. They can also include sneezing, coughing, itchiness, nosebleeds, eye discharge, and breathing problems.A healthy dog may have a mild runny nose occasionally with no cause for alarm, but chronic or severe nasal discharge could indicate serious health issues. A mild runny nose is characterised by small amounts of watery discharge, may be accompanied by sneezing, and can be a sign of nervousness. However, a severe runny nose may persist with discharge that is thicker, a colour other than clear, and may contain blood or pus. A runny nose is characterised by nasal discharge that may range from watery to thick and may contain blood or pus. Upper respiratory organs produce nasal discharge.

Itchy, flaking skin

Skin condition is a good general indicator of health. Skin should be smooth and pink or black. Persistent itching, sores, lumps and signs of dermatitis could indicate an allergic reaction to flea bites. Flea bites are just one of the many examples of insects that could cause these types of allergies and could also transmit some diseases. A common cause of skin problems in dogs is parasites such as fleas, lice, ticks and mites. Some parasites, such as Demodex mites and cheyletiellosis, may also cause your dog to have flaky skin Sarcoptic mange, known as canine scabies, which is very itchy, spreads easily among dogs, so if you suspect that your dog might have mange you should prevent him from mixing with other dogs until treatment is received. Every dog who is exposed to the outside world is vulnerable to parasites and it will be very difficult for you to identify exactly what parasite is causing your dog to have problems. To get a proper diagnosis, you should bring your dog to the surgery for an appointment. Your vet will conduct a physical examination and may also perform other tests such as skin scrapes, combings of the hair coat, and blood and urine tests.

Progressive changes in weight

You should be concerned if your dog appears to lose weight progressively over two to four weeks, or shows a slow but steady weight loss over a longer period. Unexpected weight gain can also indicate a problem. Dogs can become obese due to a variety of reasons. Some common causes of sudden weight gain in dogs include changes in diet, over-eating, lack of exercise, and problems with hormones (such as polycystic ovary syndrome or Cushing's syndrome). Dogs that are obese may also have increased risk for certain medical conditions such as heart disease, diabetes mellitus, liver disease, and joint conditions. If you see your dog gaining weight rapidly or becoming visibly unhealthy, it is important to take them to see a veterinarian or pay attention to their diet. Your veterinarian can perform a physical exam and carry out a series of diagnostic tests to determine the cause of the obesity and make treatment recommendations.

When your dog suddenly starts putting on weight, a trip to the veterinarian is often in order. While there are many possible causes for obesity in dogs, some medical conditions may be responsible. Some of the most common causes of obesity in dogs as discussed earlier would be pre-existing medical conditions (hormonal or linked to diseases). In some cases, it may be caused due to unhealthy diets and improper nutrition.

General lethargy, tiredness – just looking unwell

If for any reason your dog just isn’t his or her normal, healthy, active self, it’s worth taking a closer look. Like humans, dogs can just look unwell – and even if there are no obvious clues to what’s wrong, a trip to the vet is a good idea if symptoms persist.
