Origin Description

Small yet sturdy, the Australian Terrier was born and raised in Australia as a working terrier. Its progenitors were the rough-coated terriers brought to Australia in the early 1800s by British colonists. The Australian Terrier's unique appearance is the result of selective mating with other terrier breeds, such as the Dandie Dinmont Terrier, Yorkshire Terrier, and Cairn Terrier.

In 1850, the Australian Terrier was officially recognized, and in 1892, the breed standard was established. In 1906, the breed finally arrived in America, and it wasn't until 1960 that it was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC).

Description

An energetic and charming little breed with its roots in Australia, the Australian Terrier was originally developed as a multipurpose work dog and expert rodent hunter. This breed is small in stature (only 9–11 inches tall and 9–14 pounds heavy), but it makes up for it in charm and vitality, making it a wonderful pet for any home. The Australian Terrier's strong physique is a reflection of its self-assurance, which goes well with its energetic disposition.

The unusual double coat that the Australian Terrier sports is one of its most striking characteristics. With its wiry and thick outer layer acting as a shield from the weather, the undercoat's softer fur acts as insulation.
