Swimming is a natural way for Painted Terrapins to exercise as they are semi-aquatic turtles. You should provide your terrapin with a spacious tank where it may swim and dive. A terrapin's normal swimming movements and mobility should be unrestricted by the confines of its cage.

To make sure your terrapin receives adequate exercise, plan to swim with it often. Get your terrapin in the water for 30–60 minutes every day so it may swim about, practice swimming, and hunt for food (like feeder fish).

During swim time, provide your terrapin a range of enrichment activities to keep it active and interested. As an example, you may introduce prey items for the terrapin to practice hunting with, or you can place floating objects or real plants in the water for it to engage with.

Even though terrapins can swim rather well, it's still important to keep an eye on them when they swim for exercise. Keep a careful eye on your terrapin as it swims, and be ready to help if it becomes tired or into an accident.

Terrapins need swimming as a kind of exercise, but they also require basking areas for rest and thermoregulation. You may give your terrapin a break from the water by including basking rocks or platforms in its habitat. These will let it to soak in UVB radiation and heat.

Build a more interesting and challenging habitat for your terrapin so that it can exercise more effectively. Keeping things interesting for the terrapin might include switching décor on a regular basis, adding obstacles or hiding places in the water, or both.

If you want to exercise your terrapin, you need think about its age, size, and general health. Swimming sessions should be longer and more frequent for energetic younger terrapins, and shorter and gentler for less mobile senior terrapins.
