Origin Description

Derived after the Belgian city of Malines, the Belgian Malinois can trace its lineage back to the late 1800s when it was bred specifically to be a herding dog. Not only could it herd, but it could also protect, assist the police, and even act as a courier dog during the turbulent times of World War I. The breed's name is a clear reference to its birthplace, Malines.

The Belgian Malinois is one of four shipman breeds in Belgium; the others being the Belgian Sheepdog,' the Belgian Tervuren, and the Laekenois. These Belgian shepherds were selectively developed for their outstanding workability, as opposed to breeds that valued beauty.
