Among the four separate varieties of Belgian Shepherd dogs, the one originally from the Belgian town of Tervuren is known as the Belgian Tervuren. The breed originated in Belgium in the late 19th century, when farmers were looking for a dog that could do triple duty as a guardian, herder, and property defender.
The Belgian Kennel Club first recognized this adaptable breed in 1901, and the American Kennel Club followed suit in 1918. Its original name was the Chien de Berger Belge, which translates to Belgian Shepherd Dog.
Famous for its poise, speed, and self-assurance, the Belgian Tervuren is a medium-sized herding dog. This breed, which emerged in Belgium in the latter half of the nineteenth century, is often considered the most elegant of the four varieties of Belgian sheepdogs.
The Tervuren is a relentless and adaptable dog breed that is loving and protective of its family and friends. Its personality is best seen when it is challenged physically and mentally.
