the origin is Italy. The Bergamasco canine is a time-honoured dog breed with roots in the Italian Alps, hailing from the town of Bergamo in Lombardy, Italy. Originally, they were intentionally bred for the purpose of being a sheepdog, employed to safeguard and guide farm animals within the demanding and rugged mountain landscape.
Although the exact lineage of the Bergamasco is not clear, it is conjectured to have descended from several ancestral breeds like the French Briard, Hungarian Komondor, and the Maremma Sheepdog, amongst others. The Bergamasco's distinctive fur, consisting of lengthy, matted fibres, is believed to have developed as a means of shielding them from the chilly and damp climate of the Alps.
The Bergamasco is a dog of medium size, notable for its robust and solid physique. On average, they have a weight range of 60 to 80 pounds (27 to 36 kilograms) and a height of 22 to 23 inches (56 to 58 centimetres) when measured from the shoulder. Their physique is robust and aesthetically balanced, featuring a wide thorax, erect spine, and sturdy limbs.
A notable characteristic of the Bergamasco breed is their unique fur, consisting of lengthy, fuzzy strands that have the potential to expand up to 8-10 inches (20-25 cm) in size. The mats are produced by blending three unique hair types: a thick, soft underlayer, a rough exterior layer, and a compressed internal layer. Various colours of mats are available including black, grey, fawn, or a blend of these hues.
