Properly maintained fish can live 2-3 years happily, although in some cases they survive 3-5 years. Research indicates that betta can live happily and stress-free in a large space with several gallons of water.

How to determine bettas health

As a trainer you can monitor the health of the bettas, there are a few signs that determine whether betta is healthy or not:

Appetites

Bettas love eating, when you feed betta they act differently every time. When the feeding time comes they come to the feeding area. When the food is given, they immediately start feeding. If they do not have to eat food, that is a sign of sickness.

Bubble nest

The nest is a collection of bubbles that are on the surface of the water. When the fish are happy and comfortable, they blow bubbles on the nest. Only males can do this.

Vibrant color

Healthy betta has a beautiful and vibrant color. If they are sick, the fins are dull in color. If the fish are stressed their appearance is changed, and they develop fish stripes.

Easy swimming

A healthy betta is easy to swim, if you notice betta has trouble swimming or moving in a direction, your fish might be ill. You should consult a doctor.

Some are common disease in betta akarensis:

Fin Rot:

Fin Rot is an infection caused by bacteria and its symptom is fin tearing. The symptoms begin with a spot on the edges of the betta fin. The consequence is losing the fin. The reasons behind the bacterial infection are poor water quality, low temperature which is below 78, and the build-up of toxic ammonia compounds. It commonly affects fish that have a weak immune system.

Ich: a white patch shown on the body; it is known as white spot disease. It is caused by external parasites that irritate the skin. The symptom is itching on the skin, so they scratch their body with any object. The constant itching and scratches lead to a white spot all over the body. These symptoms include stress, dullness, loss of appetite, and even death, also caused by poor water quality.

Injury and infection: betta is an aggressive fish so they fight with each other so they end up with injury many times Also, when you add decorations that have sharp edges they may injure Betta. Betta have a weak immune system so they easily catch the infection which is viral or bacterial.

Velvet: a body color turns into golden rust because of the parasitic infection. To cure the velvet you need an over-the-counter medicine. Swim bladder occurs when your betta is overfeeding or eating quickly. High-fiber food can often resolve the issue.

Health risk

Betta fish have a poor immune system so there are various health risks associated with betta. The common health issue of combtail betta is commonly known as ichthyophthrius multifiliis. The symptoms of parasitic infection cause white spots on the skin or in fish. To reduce the chances of disease, clean the water regularly and use aquarium salt when needed. Choose a large tank so betta can move freely and the chance of disease becomes decreased.
