Migration

seasonal migration of black banded fruit dove

It tends to exhibit localized movements within its range, driven primarily by changes in food availability and breeding behavior. These movements often involve shifting between different types of forest habitats, from lowland rainforests to montane forests, in search of fruiting trees and suitable nesting sites. Despite their limited migratory behavior, Black-banded Fruit Doves can be found in various countries across Southeast Asia, particularly within their range in Indonesia.

Indonesia

As the primary range country for Black-banded Fruit Doves, Indonesia hosts diverse populations of these birds across various islands, including Sulawesi, Halmahera, and the Moluccas. These regions provide the necessary habitat consisting of tropical forests where the doves can find food and suitable nesting sites.

Papua New Guinea

In addition to Indonesia, Black-banded Fruit Doves are also found in parts of Papua New Guinea, particularly in regions with suitable forested habitats. The mountainous terrain and dense forests of Papua New Guinea offer favorable conditions for these birds, although their distribution may be more localized compared to other areas.

Australia

While not a primary range country, Australia is known to host occasional sightings of Black-banded Fruit Doves, particularly in the northern parts of Queensland. These sightings are often associated with rare occurrences or vagrancy, as the species' natural range does not extend to Australia. However, they highlight the potential for occasional dispersal across geographical barriers.

Timor-Leste

Although less commonly reported, Black-banded Fruit Doves have been documented in Timor-Leste, particularly in forested areas. Their presence in this country reflects the species' ability to inhabit various types of tropical forest habitats within its broader range across Southeast Asia.
