In order to ensure that Rhinoclemmys funerea, often known as Black River Turtles, are well-nourished when kept in captivity, it is important to learn about their specific dietary requirements. Instructions for feeding these turtles may be found here:

Black River Turtles acquire most of their nutrition from the many different kinds of water plants, algae, and other flora that they encounter in the wild. Aquatic plants, such as water lettuce and duckweed, and leafy greens, including romaine lettuce, kale, and collard greens, should make up the bulk of their diet. You may also supplement your turtle's diet with commercial pellets made for herbivores to make sure they get all the nutrients they need.

Make sure your turtles have a regular eating routine. Adult Black River Turtles usually only need to be fed once a day, while younger turtles could be hungry more often. Give them only as much food as they can eat in a fair amount of time to avoid water poisoning and overfeeding.

Either drop food into the water or use a dish inside their cage. You may use clips or just lay the food out on the water's surface to keep lettuce and other floating plants from floating away. This makes it simple to clean up after the turtles and keep tabs on how much they eat because they can eat organically.

Provide a wide range of foods to promote healthy eating habits and a balanced diet. Occasionally add goodies like fruits (e.g., berries, melon) or vegetables (e.g., carrots, squash) to their diet, and alternate between various kinds of aquatic plants and leafy greens. This type promotes a balanced diet for turtles and helps them avoid nutritional shortages.

Keeping an eye on your turtles as they eat can help you make sure they're eating properly and showing no signs of illness. Keep an eye on the food supply and make adjustments to the feeding quantities as needed to prevent overfeeding or food waste, since turtles may graze on plants throughout the day.

You may want to think about adding calcium and vitamin D3 powder to their meals as supplements. If your turtles aren't getting enough UVB radiation from sunshine or UVB lamps, you may assist maintain their shell and bone health by dusting their diet with these supplements a few times a week.

While turtles get the majority of their water from their natural environment, it's still important to provide them with access to clean, fresh water for drinking. In their basking spot or on the floor of their cage, set up a small dish or container of water. Make sure your turtles stay clean and hydrated by changing their water regularly.
