Blue-tailed skinks, akin to their Acontias relatives, thrive in environments that provide ample space for ground-dwelling activities. An ideal enclosure for a few Blue-tailed skinks, or a small group, should be at least 20 gallons long, incorporating features such as a bathing area, climbing structures, and hiding spots.

Maintaining humidity levels and facilitating natural behaviors like burrowing are essential considerations for Blue-tailed skinks. Optimal substrates made from organic materials like cypress mulch, coconut coir, or a blend of both create an environment conducive to burrowing and humidity regulation.

Blue-tailed skinks require a well-structured temperature gradient within their enclosure to ensure their comfort. Providing a warm basking area (85–90°F, 29–32°C) and a cooler region (70–75°F, 21–24°C) on opposite sides of the tank allows them to regulate their body temperature effectively.

UVB light is crucial for Blue-tailed skinks to synthesize vitamin D3, vital for calcium metabolism. Establishing a photoperiod of approximately 12 hours of light and 12 hours of darkness with an appropriate UVB light source supports their overall health.

Due to their shy and protective nature, Blue-tailed skinks appreciate having hiding places scattered throughout the enclosure. Rocks, bark, or pre-made reptile hides offer suitable hiding spots for these skinks to retreat to as needed.

Although primarily ground-dwellers, Blue-tailed skinks possess climbing abilities. Including climbing structures such as branches provides them with opportunities for natural behavior and additional environmental stimulation.

Access to a shallow dish containing clean water is crucial for Blue-tailed skinks to stay hydrated. Ensuring the water dish is kept clean and conveniently located helps prevent the growth of microorganisms.

Blue-tailed skinks thrive on a diet primarily composed of insects, with smaller options like mealworms, roaches, and crickets being suitable choices. Offering a varied and balanced diet, along with the addition of calcium and multivitamin powder to their meals, supports their nutritional needs.

Environmental enrichment is beneficial for Blue-tailed skinks and can take the form of new items, additional hiding places, or changes in the cage's scenery. This promotes their natural behaviors and provides mental stimulation for these captivating reptiles
