Prehistoric Period
The scientific name for the Bourret's box turtle is Cuora bourreti, and it is in the same family as other turtles that have been around for millions of years. There may not be much prehistoric fossil evidence for Cuora bourreti, but its family, Geoemydidae, has a rich evolutionary history.
The discovery of fossils of turtles that resemble members of the Geoemydidae family in different parts of the world suggests that these creatures were present during the prehistoric era.
Various kinds of life, such as early reptiles and dinosaurs, inhabited Earth during this period. Prehistoric ecosystems were home to a variety of turtles, including modern-day relatives like the Bourret's box turtle.
During the Paleogene and Neogene epochs, which occurred between 66 and 2.6 million years ago, the evolutionary chain of Geoemydidae most certainly persisted. The diversification and adaptation of turtles to different settings across these epochs resulted in the formation of many species within the family. Cuora bourreti's exact evolutionary path is unknown, however it is safe to assume that its progenitors were around during the same time as other ancient organisms.
Adaptations to its environment and interactions with predators presumably evolved over millions of years to define Bourret's box turtle's traits, including as its hinged plastron and domed carapace. Although there may be no evidence of Bourret's box turtles in prehistoric times, the fact that they are still around today shows how resilient and adaptable turtles are.
