Catahoula Leopard Dogs typically reach sexual maturity between 6 to 12 months of age. This indicates they have the physical capacity to have children and engage in sexual conduct.
The timing and frequency of heat cycles can vary slightly among individual dogs, but on average, female Catahoulas go into heat approximately twice a year.
Responsible breeders carefully select mating pairs based on factors such as health, temperament, and conformation to breed dogs that adhere to breed standards and have a lower risk of genetic disorders.
However, not all dog owners have the knowledge, resources, or intention to engage in responsible breeding. For owners who don't plan to breed their Catahoulas, spaying (for females) or neutering (for males) is highly recommended.
