A unique combination of morphological traits contribute to the peculiar look and ecological adaptations of the Central American mud turtle, Kinosternon hirtipes. The top shell, or carapace, of a Central American mud turtle is usually colored dark brown to black and is one of the most noticeable characteristics of the animal. Turtles are able to move about easily on land and in water because to their relatively smooth and dome-shaped shells, which also protect their internal organs. The appearance of the turtle is enhanced by the presence of dots or streaks that are yellowish or orangeish on the carapace.
