The appearance of the turtle is enhanced by the presence of dots or streaks that are yellowish or orangeish on the carapace.

In contrast to its dark carapace, the bottom shell, or plastron, of a Central American mud turtle will usually be a lighter shade of yellowish brown. The underbelly of the turtle is further protected from predators and environmental threats by its shell.

Small and triangular in form, the Central American mud turtle's sharp snout helps it forage for food. A broad field of vision is provided by the placement of its eyes on the sides of the head, allowing it to identify possible dangers or prey. The turtle can breathe partly underwater because its nostrils are situated toward the tip of its snout.

The leg structure of the Central American mud turtle is sturdy and short, and its webbed feet let it to move on land and swim. In addition to facilitating movement inside its aquatic environment, these unique limbs provide the turtle with stability and grip on a wide range of surfaces.
