The Chesapeake Bay Retriever, often referred to as the Chessie is a breed that embodies the spirit of the American East Coast.

Originating from the Chesapeake Bay area, these dogs were bred in the mid-19th century with a specific purpose in mind: to retrieve waterfowl, such as ducks and geese, from the icy waters of the bay.

This task required a dog with strength, endurance, and a thick, oily coat to protect it from the cold.

Origin Description

Strictly evolved in the Chesapeake Bay area of Maryland and Virginia in the 19th century, the Chesapeake Bay Retriever is a uniquely American breed. Carefully combining Irish water spaniels as well as ' Newfoundlands as well as ' and other undetermined breeds resulted in the composition of the breed. The aim of this stirred breeding was to make a dog that would be exceptionally well suited to the dirty job of retrieving ducks from the cold waters of the Chesapeake Bay.

Chesapeake Bay Retrievers were first developed as working dogs, but they soon became familiar for their skill in recovering birds as well as ' peculiarly ducks and geese. Their thick, oily coat is one of their most classifiable characteristics since it fulfills two functions.
