Environment in Water: Pelodiscus sinensis spend much of their time in water, being mostly aquatic turtles. For this reason, it is essential that the habitat include an open-ended swimming and diving area, such as a large pond or tank. Every swimmer has their preferred depth of water, thus it's important to have regions that are shallow and areas that are deeper.
The well-being of Chinese softshell turtles depends on the water quality, therefore be sure to keep it high. Use the proper test kits on a regular basis to keep an eye on things like water temperature, pH, ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate concentrations. Reduce stress and the risk of water-related illnesses by keeping the filtration system in good working order and changing the water regularly to eliminate trash and debris.
Sand, fine gravel, or a mix of aquatic plants and supple substrate materials are all good options for creating a habitat that is both smooth and non-abrasive. Pelodiscus sinensis use these substrates as a stand-in for the actual bottoms of rivers and lakes, where they rest and feed. To create an environment that offers hiding places, exploring possibilities, and places to relax, use water plants, driftwood, rocks, and man-made caves.
Despite spending much of their time in water, Chinese softshell turtles get the most out of a special basking area where they can dry off and adjust their body temperature. To create the effect of natural sunshine, set up a UVB lamp and a dry platform or floating dock. The ideal basking spot for a turtle is one that is both big enough to suit its needs and conveniently located near water.
Light up the basking area with UVB lamps to provide the vital ultraviolet radiation for healthy calcium metabolism and general well-being. To keep the UVB levels where they should be, use reptile-specific bulbs and change them out as the manufacturer suggests.
Add a range of environmental cues to the habitat to encourage natural behaviours and mental stimulation. Bring in some real food, like fish or insects, so they can hunt and eat. At regular intervals, switch up the arrangement of the room's furnishings to keep things interesting and discourage boredom. To improve the turtle's health in general, you should provide it with toys or floating things that encourage exploration and movement.
