During the two times yearly shedding seasons, which may be more frequent for spayed or neutered animals, the extra time and attention spent grooming your Chinook will be invaluable. Maintaining the health and appearance of their coat requires regular brushing. At the very least once per week, you should brush your Chinook to remove any stray hairs, dirt, or other debris. To keep their fur in good condition, use a slicker brush or pin brush to remove knots and mats as needed.
It is just as important to keep their nails in good shape as it is to comb their fur. Overly long nails may be unpleasant for the dog and cause problems with walking and running, thus regular cutting is required for all breeds. Nails on Chinooks should be cut every 4 to 6 weeks to avoid these issues.
Chinooks also have to take care of their hygiene by bathing once every two to three months, or more often if necessary. It is vital to use dog-specific shampoo and conditioner when bathing your Chinook and to rinse thoroughly to remove all traces of the products.
Also, Chinooks are prone to ear infections because their floppy ears are a magnet for dirt and moisture.
Ears should be cleaned weekly with cotton swabs and an ear cleaner designed for dogs to avoid these problems.
Maintaining good dental hygiene is also crucial. At least twice weekly, Chinooks should clean their teeth to avoid dental issues including tartar accumulation and gum disease. A dog's teeth and breath may be kept clean and fresh with the use of a toothbrush and toothpaste designed specifically for canines.
Lastly, Chinooks are prone to eye irritation because of their delicate eyes. Cleaning the area around their eyes on a frequent basis with a moist cloth can help keep their eyes clean and healthy. Chinooks need a rigorous grooming and maintenance regimen to ensure their health and well-being.
