Grooming

When keeping Colombian sliders (Trachemys callirostris) in captivity, it's important to pay close attention to their habitat, food, and general health so they may flourish in a regulated setting.

provide a roomy and safe abode. Glass aquariums or big plastic tubs with tight-fitting lids work well for indoor installations. Another option is to utilise an outdoor pond with proper filtration and a predator-proof design. Appropriate swimming, sunbathing, and exploring area should be provided by the enclosure's dimensions.

build an appropriate environment. Make sure the inclosure has both land and water features. The water in the pool should be clean and dechlorinated; it should be deep enough to swim in yet shallow enough to swim to a sunbathing spot. Bask in the light of a heat lamp or UVB lamp on smooth logs, pebbles, or turtle docks purchased from a pet store.

keep the water quality at an acceptable level. When cleaning the tank, be sure to use a filtering system that is proportional to the water volume. Maintain water quality and eliminate accumulated garbage and uneaten food by doing frequent partial water changes (25-50% weekly). Using the right test kits, keep an eye on the water's temperature, pH, ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels.

provide a healthy, well-rounded diet. Because of their omnivorous nature, Colombian sliders need a varied diet that includes commercial turtle pellets, raw veggies (such as carrots and squash), fruits (such as berries and melons), and leafy greens (such as romaine lettuce and kale). Treat them to little bits of protein-rich foods like insects, earthworms, or feeder fish. Prevent calcium shortage by dusting food with a reptile calcium supplement that contains vitamin D3 many times weekly.

stay at the right temperatures. A basking area ranging from 29°C to 32°C (85°F to 90°F) is necessary for the temperature regulation of Colombian sliders. To keep the temperature of the inclosure between 24 and 29 degrees Celsius (75 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit), you may use a ceramic heat emitter or a basking light. Consistently check temperatures using a trustworthy thermometer.

Provide ultraviolet B light. For the proper metabolism of calcium and the prevention of metabolic bone disease, UVB radiation is crucial for Colombian sliders. Follow the manufacturer's guidelines for the distance and duration of exposure when using a UVB lamp meant for reptiles. To make sure they keep giving out enough UVB rays, change out the bulbs every 6 to 12 months.

keep an eye on people's habits and well-being. Keep a close eye on your Colombian sliders to detect any symptoms of stress or disease, such as a lack of energy, strange behaviour while swimming, or problems in their shell. To keep them healthy and deal with any issues quickly, make an appointment with a vet that specialises in reptile care on a regular basis.
