It is essential to provide appropriate water conditions for the health and welfare of captive-bred Colombian sliders (Trachemys callirostris). Because these turtles evolved in freshwater environments, it is crucial to provide them with an environment that is similar to their native habitat while caring for them.
To begin, a large enough aquatic environment that enables the Colombian slider to swim, bask, and forage is essential. When kept inside, a big plastic tub or aquarium may work just well. Assuming they are protected from predators and have proper filtration and maintenance of water quality, outdoor ponds may also serve as realistic habitats.
Second, the best water is the most important thing. The turtles' well-being may be compromised if the water in their habitat is polluted or contains harmful substances like ammonia or nitrites. Keeping water quality high requires a reliable filtration system that can remove waste and particles at a pace proportional to the amount of water in the tank.
Thirdly, be vigilant about checking the water temperature. Make sure the water stays in this ideal range by using a trustworthy aquarium thermometer. In colder areas or during winter, a submersible heater may be necessary to keep the water temperature steady in an aquarium.
Plus, make sure there's a spot to soak up some sun. Put a heat lamp or UVB light below a flat rock, log, or turtle dock to provide a readily accessible basking spot. Maintaining a temperature range of around 85°F to 90°F (29°C to 32°C) will promote basking behaviour in this location.
Fifthly, make sure the water is at the right depth. Even though they spend most of their time in water, Colombian sliders need access to shallow places where they may hop from one body of water to another. For the most part, turtles do best in water that is 1.5 to 2 times their shell length. There are secure spots to relax and soak up some rays at this level, which is also ideal for swimming and diving.
The sixth point is to keep the water and environment clean and in good repair. To keep the water clean and free of debris, you should do partial water changes (around 25% to 50%) once a week. To clean the substrate, use a syphon or an aquarium gravel vacuum.
Maintain a healthy habitat for your Colombian sliders by routinely monitoring water parameters with the right test kits. These factors include pH, ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels.
