The tradition has its roots in Engl. The "Curly," short for "Curly Coated Retriever," is a kind of dog that was first developed in Engl in the latter part of the 18th century. A mix of native water dogs, the Irish Water Spaniel, the St. John's Newfoundl resulted in the development of what is now considered one of the oldest retriever breeds.
