Even though Dalmatians have a short hair, they still shed. To maintain their coat healthy and minimize shedding, brush them often. Natural oils are distributed and loose hair is removed by brushing as well. For this, you may use either a soft-bristle brush or a rubber grooming glove. It may be required to brush more often during shedding seasons.
Because their coats naturally contain oils, Dalmatians don't need to be bathed too often. Try to give them a wash every few months or if they get very filthy. For dogs with sensitive skin, use a gentle shampoo designed for that condition. To prevent skin irritation caused by residue, rinse well after use.
Because of their unusual ear anatomy, Dalmatians often get ear infections. Keep an eye out for redness, smell, or discharge in their ears on a regular basis. Use cotton balls and an ear cleaner that the vet has prescribed to gently clean their ears. Stay away from anything that might go deep into your ear canal.
Your Dalmatian's nails should be kept at a manageable length. In addition to being uncomfortable, long nails may alter their walk. Ask your physician or a professional groomer for advice if you're not sure how to cut your pet's nails.
Proper dental care is essential to the general well-being of your Dalmatian. To keep gums healthy and tartar at bay, clean your dog's teeth regularly using a canine-specific toothbrush and toothpaste.
Be sure to check your Dalmatian's skin for rashes, dryness, and irritations on a regular basis. Pigmented skin may mask certain skin imperfections, so be careful around spots.
All dogs, even Dalmatians, are at risk of contracting fleas and ticks. Make careful to inspect your dog for ticks and take the necessary precautions while you're out in nature, especially in grassy or forested areas.
