To keep their medium-length coats free of mats and tangles, English Cocker Spaniels need to be brushed often. At the very least, brush them twice or thrice weekly; during shedding seasons, you should brush them even more often. To detangle hair and eliminate debris, use a brush with medium-to-fine bristles or a slicker brush. You should focus on tangle-prone regions, such as those behind the ears, neck, and legs.
The coat of your English Cocker Spaniel needs regular washings to be clean and healthy. Take a bath every four to six weeks, or more often if necessary. To keep the coat's natural oils intact, use a gentle dog shampoo. If you don't want to irritate your skin, rinse the coat well after washing it to remove any shampoo residue.
Due to their large, drooping ears, English Cocker Spaniels are susceptible to ear infections caused by the accumulation of dirt and water. Look for redness, smell, or excessive wax accumulation in their ears once a week. Use cotton balls and an ear cleaning solution made for dogs; just be careful not to put anything too far into their ear canals.
To avoid pain, discomfort, and perhaps walking problems caused by overgrown nails, it is vital to have your nails trimmed regularly. Once every two to four weeks, give them a brief trim, taking careful not to slice too near the quick (the blood artery within the nail).
You may give your English Cocker Spaniel a quick brushing at home on a daily basis, but for a more thorough grooming service once every few months, consider bringing it to a professional. This includes all the essential maintenance tasks, such as a complete coat trim, ear cleaning, nail clipping, and more.
