understanding feist dogs reproductive health

The usual age at which a dog has her first heat cycle is about six months of age but may occur as early as four months in toy and miniature breeds. Some gigantic breeds, however, may not enter heat until they are 18–24 months old.

Due to immature eggs and a lack of physical development, it is highly advised that young female dogs not be bred during their first and second cycles. When your dog has reached sexual maturity, your vet may provide you with advice on how to proceed with breeding.

Female canines' heat cycles span an average of two to four weeks. Some female dogs may be infertile early in their cycles, while others may stay fertile throughout their whole cycles. The length of the cycle might vary, and you can determine it has completed when the vulva returns to its usual size, and there is no more bleeding or discharge.

Dogs are most fertile for a brief period of time during their heat cycle, which may begin nine to ten days into the cycle and persist for around five days. It's important to remember, however, that a dog may become pregnant up to the end of the cycle.

Like other breeds of dog, feisty canines normally reach sexual maturity between 6 and 12 months of age. While they may experience their first heat cycle as early as six months, it is preferable to wait until they are at least a year old before contemplating breeding. Dogs normally procreate twice a year, in the spring and autumn.
