Grooming

Brushing: To prevent matting, distribute natural oils, and remove stray hair, brush your Golden Newfie's coat periodically. Working with a slicker brush or medium-toothed comb, detangle their fur, giving special attention to tangle-prone areas like the area behind their ears, behind their legs, and around their tail. Two or three times a week is a good goal to aim for, and more often during shedding seasons is even better.

The shedding behavior of Golden Newfies is modest. They "blow" their coat twice a year, the second time being more heavy-handed than the first. At these times, you need to brush your hair every day to get rid of the extra. A grooming rake or de-shedding tool might be useful for controlling the shedding.

Bathing: Give your Golden Retriever a bath whenever it's necessary, usually every two to three months, or if it's very filthy or smells bad. To wash your dog without irritating their skin or hair, use a dog-formulated shampoo. Rinse well to eliminate any soap residue. Make sure to towel-dry them after a bath and, if needed, use a low-heat dryer to completely dry their coat.

To keep your Golden Retriever comfortable and to avoid problems like splitting, snagging, and overgrowth, it's necessary to trim their nails regularly. When trimming your dog's nails with a clipper or grinder, be careful not to cut too near the quick, which is the pink area of the nail that contains blood vessels. Consult a veterinarian or professional groomer for advice if you feel awkward or unsure about clipping your nails.

Ear Washing: It is crucial to maintain clean and dry ears for Golden Newfies since they are susceptible to ear infections. Be on the lookout for redness, discharge, or foul odor in their ears on a frequent basis. To gently clean the outside of their ears, use cotton balls or pads and an ear cleaning solution that has been prescribed by their veterinarian. Stay away from anything that might go deep into your ear canal.

Having your Golden Retriever professionally groomed is an option to consider in addition to the necessary frequent at-home maintenance. Groomers have the training and equipment to give your dog a full grooming, which includes de-matting, clipping, and cleaning of the ears and hair. Your preferences and your dog's individual requirements should be considered when deciding how often to get your dog professionally groomed.
