Female Norwegian Buhunds typically reach sexual maturity between the ages of 6 and 12 months. This means that they become capable of breeding and can experience their first heat cycle during this time. It's important to note that the exact timing can vary among individuals, and some females may reach maturity earlier or later within this range.

A heat cycle, or estrus, is what a female Bulldog goes through as she reaches sexual maturity. There are three stages to the heat cycle: pre-, during-, and post-cycle. A woman is not yet ready to have children during proestrus, the first stage of the menstrual cycle, but she may attract male dogs. Changes in behavior, such as more frequent urination and vulvar swallowing, characterize this phase.

The female is at her most fertile and ready to reproduce during the estrus phase, which follows proestrus. This phase usually lasts from 9 to 12 days, however it might vary from person to person. The female may display symptoms including a swollen vulva, a discharge that changes color from blood to straw, and a receptive attitude toward aggressive canines at this time.

Sexual maturity is often reached by 8 to 12 months of age in Male Norwegian Buhunds. Their sexual maturity and ability to reproduce are fully realized at this stage.

It is advised to wait until both the male and female have attained physical and emotional maturity before contemplating having a family, however it is worth noting that males may reach sexual maturity earlier than females.
