Sometimes, urinary tract conditions can be associated with other diseases, including chronic kidney disease and hyperthyroidism. However, in many cases, there doesn’t seem to be an underlying cause at all – in this case, the technical diagnosis would be “feline idiopathic cystitis” (FIC).

UTIs are bacterial infections that affect the urinary system, including the bladder and urethra. Cats with UTIs often experience difficulty urinating, frequent urination, blood in the urine, and discomfort while urinating.

Male cats are particularly prone to urinary obstruction due to the narrower and longer urethra. It can be caused by crystals, stones, mucus, or plugs, which obstruct the flow of urine. A blocked cat may strain to urinate, produce only small amounts of urine, show signs of pain, and may become lethargic or distressed.
