The short, tightly-knit coat of a whippet does not shed very much. To keep your pet's coat looking healthy and shiny, brush it once a week using a grooming mitt or soft bristle brush to remove dead hair and distribute natural oils. Brushing your Whippet on a regular basis allows you to connect with your pet and detect any anomalies or problems with its skin.
Unless they get too filthy or begin to smell bad, whippets don't need to be bathed very often. To maintain a clean and fresh coat, give your dog a bath every two to three months, or as required, using a gentle dog shampoo. If you don't want to dry out your dog's skin, use a shampoo made for dogs.
Whippets must have their nails trimmed regularly to prevent pain and gait issues caused by excessively long nails. Be careful not to cut too near to the quick (the blood artery within the nail) while trimming their nails, which should be done every few weeks or as required.
Keep an eye out for infection symptoms, debris, or dirt in their ears. A moist cotton ball or an ear cleaner designed for dogs should be used gently to clean the ears, as advised by your doctor. Never put anything in your ear.
Proper dental care is essential for all breeds. To keep your Whippet's teeth healthy, brush them many times weekly using a dog-safe toothpaste and toothbrush. They might also benefit from dental toys and chews to maintain clean teeth.
Despite their short coat, Whippets, particularly those with lighter coloration, are susceptible to skin irritation and sunburn. When going outside, make sure they're in some shade and, if your doctor suggests it, use dog-safe sunscreen to prevent sunburn.
