Characteristics

Standing at the shoulder at roughly 10 to 11 inches (25 to 28 cm) and weighing around 12 to 14 pounds (5.5 to 6.5 kg), the Australian Terrier is a small and well-proportioned breed. Erect ears, a typically docked tail (though this practice is becoming less popular), and a rough, weather-resistant coat are unique traits that match their strong physique and somewhat longer body than height.

The distinctive double coat of an Australian Terrier—a thick undercoat and a thick, straight outside coat—serves as a barrier between the dog and the outdoors. They come in a variety of hues, including blue and tan, red, sandy, or pure red. Their beards and unique eyebrows give them an expressive look.

Frequently developing profound relationships with their human family members, Australian Terriers are renowned for their energetic, bright, and loving personalities. These little dogs have an air of confidence and daring befitting their diminutive stature; their naturally inquisitive nature makes them fantastic explorers.

Australian Terriers need to be physically and intellectually challenged on a daily basis due to their moderate to high activity levels. Canine sports, obedience training, and playing are just a few of the many activities in which these dogs excel.

Early socialization helps Australian Terriers, who are amiable and flexible dogs, develop into well-rounded pets. When socialized early on, they make great companions for other canines and animals. Preventing shyness or over-protectiveness is another benefit of proper socializing.

The Australian Terrier is a highly trainable dog breed that responds well to positive reinforcement techniques like praise, treats, and prizes because of its high intelligence and want to please. And because of their natural inclination to warn their family of danger, they make excellent watchdogs; however, their barking may be controlled with training.
