Butterflyfish are predators, they prefer to eat live food such as small insects and crustaceans. Some species eat detritus and algae. They live in pairs, each pair staying together while hunting for food.
Butterflyfish diets play an essential role in the coral reef ecosystem because they maintain the population of small insects. Sometimes diet is a crucial thing when you keep a butterflyfish as a pet. You can feed them a common betta food to fulfill the nutritional value. Give them fish flakes.. Because they are picky eaters even with pellets and flakes.
Butterflyfish eat protein-rich and freeze-dried food such as bloodworms, daphnia, and shrimp as well as live food like mosquitoes, and small insects. They also prefer edible frozen food. If you prefer to give frozen food give a time to food to defrost and soak in water.
Like most fishes, butterfly fish have a weak immune system so it is difficult to process carbohydrates such as corn, and wheat. Which are used to temporarily feel the belly of the fish. The main betta diet consists of animal protein and green leaf. When you feed the butterflyfish give a small amount of the food, and serve them with 2 -3 times a day. Because when you gave them large portation of food then can not tolerate them. And it leads to gas and constipation.
These species can sometimes have trouble digesting prepared food. So you can serve them high-nutrient value food such as live food, frozen food, and algae.
Some common betta foods you can offers are:
Pellets: pellets and omega are the first choice for elephant ear betta keepers. This food was easy to digest and rich in protein.
Flake food: flake food comes with different fillers so Betta remains interested in food. But feeding for a long time the same food causes bloating.
Frozen food: this is one of the favorite betta foods such as bloodworms. Some of the betta caretakers use frozen food like junk food or primary food.
Freeze-dried: treat your betta sometimes for change offer them Daphnia, Brine Shrimp as an occasional treat. When they are bored from the regular diet offer them dried worms or shrimp.
Live food: live food is common for betta fry. some other live foods that can be used are mosquito larvae, bloodworms, and small insects.
